November 30, 2022: I hope your week has started off on the right foot, mine certainly has!
I was listening to Sirius XM, channel 21 at the Underground Garage, and suddenly I heard Little Steven Van Zandt, say my name, and he deemed my new single, “On My Way to You”, The Coolest Song in the World this week!
I can’t believe how lucky I feel today. You can’t imagine the thrill for this kid who discovered rock ‘n’ roll on 7” vinyl 45 singles and on the radio as a three and four-year-old kid now hearing his own music on the radio.
I wanted to share my writing and recording process with you on my latest single for Wicked Cool Records, NYC.
“On My Way To You” was written, recorded and mixed nearly a year ago and I couldn’t have enjoyed it more! Sometimes a lyric spills out quickly in a stream of consciousness, and sometimes it happens more slowly.
Well, it all flowed fast this time. I started with the 1st verse lyric “I was ridin’ with a ghost, she was the ghost I loved the most, she said, “oh yeah…” With the exact rhythm and phrasing you hear on the record. I knew that I would sing those background vocal answer lines “yeah, oh yeah!” in kind of “this is your reality talking to you” idea. Once I had that written down, with the back-and-forth, the rest of the lyric just kind of fell into place.
For me, the song is about working out our past in our relationships, so that we can be our best selves in the future. The idea is that all experiences are here for our spiritual growth, all relationships are teachable moments for us, no matter how much it hurts before we move forward. I know that sounds like pop psychology, contrasted by the grimy and dirty sound of the song, but at least you know that sometimes there is a softer, but deep edge under all of that feral wildness.
When it came time to write the bridge, my wonderful mix engineer friend, Joe Zook suggested kind of an evangelist guy, yelling out declarations, with long delayed echoes on them..
I rode that feeling, taking the listener into a dreamworld with me where the singer finds himself on a psychedelic detour and emotional breakthrough.
I started this recording with engineer extraordinaire Jose Alcantar at my home studio, Bad Manors. We built the track starting with one guitar and my own drum programming. I then called my dear friend and remarkable bass player, Davey Faragher to come and play bass and sing background vocals with me. He played and sang SO great! I then gave it to my long time friend, collaborator, and amazing musician, Abe Laboriel, Jr. who contributed drums and more backing vocals at his Sacred Bovine Studio. After messing around with the recording until I felt it was done, I sent it to my friend, Joe Zook to mix at his home studio.
So there you have it.
Here and now, for your viewing pleasure is my brand new performance video of my new single, directed by the talented Tim Roth. We filmed the whole video here at my house in Palm Springs, and then recently handed it off to a visual artist friend of mine, Michael Allen, to run Tim’s pristine and gorgeous footage through some of his secret “grime and noise” filters.
I hope you dig it, and that I haven’t put you to sleep with my loquacious verbosity.
Thank you all for your support, and please feel free to visit our store to buy a vinyl single of your own, signed, or unsigned and perhaps bundle it with all my previous singles from Wicked Cool Records!
We also will be offering some super cool black coffee mugs in two sizes.
Check it out!
